Curated by the Maryland Institute College of Art’s (MICA) M.F.A. in Curatorial Practice Class of 2015, LOCALLY SOURCED explores how exchanges between local artists and their neighbors help a community thrive. For the exhibition, five artists based in central Baltimore’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District--Aaron Henkin, Jason Hoylman, Nether, Wendel Patrick, and Paula Whaley—have produced newly commissioned works in a variety of media. Through sculpture, sound, photography, painting, and installation, these artists offer different perspectives on the vibrant and interconnected cultural landscape of Station North.
The first M.F.A. of its kind in the country, MICA’s M.F.A. in Curatorial Practice prepares students to expand the role of curators in connecting art, artists, and communities—engaging audiences by developing relevant, timely, and accessible exhibitions in both traditional and non-traditional venues. Through intensive, hands-on experiences developing exhibitions, both in the community and with colleagues, students make transformative choices regarding what art is exhibited and in what context.
Locally Sourced is the culminating project for of Class of 2015 M.F.A. Curatorial Practice first-year Practicum course. Professor Gerald Ross, Director of Exhibitions at MICA, and Professor Jeffry Cudlin, Faculty in Curatorial Practice, co-teach this course, guiding students who spend a full year planning and implementing an exhibition specifically addressing audiences in Station North. A Practicum Advisory Committee including members of the local community and Baltimore art, design, and museum professionals monitor student progress throughout the course.
